All and every value derives itself from the value of life. In simple words, the good things, are those which help the humans in the way to a better life.If you have a good car that facilitates your life, which is reliable and need only the basic service, you are rather to keep it, to mend it, if it takes damages from environment and from the erosive hand of time. But else, if your car, although expensive, is not reliable, ( a breakdown in mid of Arizona Desert is no fun) you have to think about a new one, a more efficient, more durable, more useful and thus, more valuable for your life!
A language is in this aspect, the same as a car, only that it belongs to a group of people, to an special culture etc. If Vatican preserves the Latin language, this is for the sake of its usefulness for the communication between all these priests from all these countries , which each one has another language.
A language is a living, dynamic thing, entangled in evolution, which can lead it to higher degrees of perfection, or, it can decline, be attacked and fall down to lower degrees. If the expense of its restoration or preservation is estimated to be too high, it is not still worth the preservation. It is better to adopt an other existing and more efficient language. For example, the Celtic languages perished and its speakers, changed to roman language , creating the recent French.
A language, similar to a religion, is a long lasting matter, and thus, it is very expensive to replace it with a new better one ( translating all these books ...) . It is less costly, if we spend a continuous effort to protect it from harm and decline. And even it is better to try to restore a highly damaged language, as to let it die, because a language has a cultural value too: It is a heritage of our ancestors, with which, they were once so successful over millenniums. which shows that we can still be so. It makes us to what we are. If we ever had something to be proud of it, lets keep it.
