گولد البته مارکسیست بود و این در بدبینی او به زیست‌جامعه‌شناسی بی‌تاثیر نبود، اما این اتهام که او منتقد محور گرفتن انتخاب طبیعی به عنوان رانه‌ی اصلی فرگشت بود چون با نگاه ایدئولوژیک او به جهان تطابق نداشت و می‌خواست راه‌حل جایگزینی پیدا بکند اتهام سخیفی‌ست که ادوارد ویلسون با بی‌اخلاقی نفرت‌انگیزی که ویژگی اصلی شخصیت منحوس اوست به گولد بست. به راستی که تاکنون آدمی از این موجود رذل‌تر و چندش‌آورتر در جهان علم وجود نداشته! اما با اینهمه من با وجود نقرتی که از ویلسون دارم و علاقه‌ای که گولد، با نقد او از تعمیم بیولوژی به انسان و برسی جایگاه و کنشگری انسان به عنوان موجودی تحت رانه‌های فرگشتیک خود هیچ همنگر نیستم.

در این مورد خود گولد دفاع خوبی داره:
